All I want is a little clarity. I am the type of person who gets bothered by imprecise language, especially when it is within my own industry. You see, it’s my job to write about window blinds and shades and the terms, window treatments and coverings are bantered about all the time with little regard to their real meaning.

I decided to do some research and get a definitive answer, which I would share with the public. I am not expecting to create some kind of revolution just want to shed some light on a couple of pretty nebulous words.

First, I went to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary and found nothing, no definition for either word. How could that be? These are fairly common terms. This is confusing to me. I use an online tool in my work that tells me how many times per day the internet searching public uses keywords. The word window treatments gets used about 2,600 per day and the word window coverings gets used about 625 per day. And yet, these words are not clearly defined. I sense a conspiracy – just kidding.

My next resource was Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia with descriptions and explanations written by everyday people. I found the following entries:

A window covering is material used to cover a window to reduce sunlight, to provide additional weatherproofing, or to ensure privacy. Window Coverings are usually on the interior side of windows, but can be on the exterior in some situations. Types of coverings include: drapes, curtains, window blinds, including: Venetian blinds, mini blinds, window shutters, various types of boarding, nailed or screwed to the window casing, can be used as temporary window covering.

In interior decorating, a window treatment may refer to any of the following items placed over or around a window: curtains or drapery, including sheers, window blinds, including Venetian blinds, a valance, tiebacks used to hold curtains. It may also include treatments applied to directly to the glass, including: frosted glass (through acid, etching, sandblasting, or plastic films or panels), distorted optics, such as wavy glass, stained glass panels or ornaments.

It seems to me, based on these two entries that there is little difference between their meanings. Both include window blinds, drapes, curtains and Venetian blinds (an old term for what is now commonly referred to as mini blinds). Where they seem to depart, at least according to these descriptions is that window coverings includes shutters (in this case plantation shutters) and window treatments can include treatments to the glass itself.

Both have the basic meaning of something to decorate or cover a window for privacy and light-control (room darkening) and to accentuate the décor of a room. So, essentially what we have here are two poorly defined words that have virtually the same meaning. So, I would like to make a personal ruling on this issue and say that window treatments should be any treatment: drapes, blinds and shades on the interior (inside) portion of a window, whereas window coverings should be any treatment: shutters, storm shutters, and awnings to the outside portion of a window. That seems clearer to me. Doesn’t mean that everyone is suddenly going to jump on my definition bandwagon, but I can hope.

Homeowners, especially those with small children, often ask me how to get rid of paint odors. It’s such a big concern for some folks that they’ll ask me about potential odor control before they even book the painting estimate.

The good news is that the evolution of house paint has come a long way with low-odor and even odorless lines for some applications. The bad news is there are still so many reasons to use the smelly stuff, especially if you’re repainting an older home. Alkyd (oil-based) and shellac or alcohol primers are especially effective in sealing water damage and old oil painted surfaces to upgrade them to Latex top coats. But they’re also very smelly with potentially long-lasting vapors. Even the most common low-odor alkyd paints often used today to repaint wood work can have a lingering odor for days under the most ventilated conditions.

So how do you get rid of the smell?

I’ve just received an email from a mother asking me that very question. Her young child’s room was painted almost two weeks ago and she’s left the windows open and the fan on ever since. Still, the paint smell is strong enough that she’s concerned about letting the child sleep in the room. The painting of this room involved a lot of priming to cover the dark brown oil paint used by the previous home owner. Since the color needed to be lightened up and the surfaces converted to a far more Eco-friendly Acrylic Latex, a common top brand Alkyd primer was used to give the whole room a fresh start. And although it had “Low Odor” printed on the can, it obviously was NOT odorless. To compound matters, all the woodwork had to be finished in a leading “Low Odor” brand of Alkyd semi gloss which produced a smooth lustrous finish as well as a migraine inducing vapor.

So what can you do? Well, there a few ways you can overcome these situations beyond obvious ventilation to control, eliminate and even prevent odors from lingering.

“An ounce of prevention”…. Before there was such a thing as “low odor paint” we used to add a splash of vanilla extract to every gallon of oil paint to make it “low-odor”. It was cheap, easy to do and had no effect on the color. Now that low-odor alkyd paints are commonplace on the market, adding about a tablespoon of vanilla extract makes them virtually odorless.

Or, as in the case above, the painting is already done. It’s too late for vanilla and the smell won’t go away as quickly they’d like. What’s happening here is that the odors are being trapped in the walls while the paint cures and probably in all the fabrics and rugs in the room as well. They need something else to absorb them for good. So, here’s what I advised her to do. Cut up a few onions and place them in a couple of bowls of cold water. Put one of the bowls in the room and the other in the closet. As simple and crazy as it sounds, the onions absorb and actually eliminate the paint fumes and odors… sometimes as quickly as overnight!

I first learned this trick while creating a baby’s room about 17 years ago. I had spent about 5 weeks converting a badly crumbling and dusty old attic room into a nursery pending the baby’s birth. And as it turned out, the baby was born about two weeks early and was ready to come home just as I was finishing the project. The job required a lot of smelly primers and sealers to bury decades of neglect and water damage. As was customary in those days, I added vanilla extract to minimize the paints’ odor (and damage to my brain cells) but the smell wasn’t clearing up fast enough to bring the newborn in. The homeowner’s Nanny, who was moving into the bedroom next door (and who was also troubled by the smell) used a couple of bowls of cut onions in cold water over night and the smell was gone the next day. I couldn’t believe it!

I’ve recommended this technique ever since with great results. But it should be noted here that this example was in an empty room. In the case of a fully furnished room, as in our case above, you should consider airing out clothing, drapery, rugs or anything else which might be trapping the odors and give them a shot or two of Febreeze to do the trick nowadays.

Now sometimes, there are extreme cases where odors are simply not an option. Some people are highly allergic to the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) contained in paints and the tints used to color them. Some can become quite ill with even short term inhalation of the fumes. In these cases, you have to resort to the whole gamut of tricks:

Before you paint, empty the room completely to make sure there is nothing that will trap the odors.

Open all the windows before you open the paint cans and keep them open throughout the entire painting process.

Add vanilla extract to your Alkyd, Alcohol or Shellac based paints. (Latex paints don’t usually need this step as they’re relatively low-odor to begin with).

Place several bowls of onions around the room (as above) while you paint to absorb the fumes as they escape.

When the painting is finished, seal and remove all paint cans, bag your drop sheets in plastic before taking them out through the rest of the house (or throw them out of the window if possible) to keep from spreading the fumes they’ve trapped indoors.

Refresh your supply of onions in water as the old ones will have had their fill of vapors by the time your finished the painting.

Keep the windows open and wait until the paint has fully dried and the odors have gone before you replace the furniture and other belongings.

Of course, these tips are offered in connection with interior painting but you should also try adding some vanilla to your paint when painting the exterior in Alkyd coatings as well. It saves the painter a lot headaches… literally. But whether inside or out, these simple ideas combined with some good old fashioned common sense should produce a fresh new look with clean, breathable air you can live with.

When I think of stained glass windows, or stained glass lampshades, I think of Louis Comfort Tiffany. What is his story? How did he come to create such magnificent pieces of art?

Louis Comfort Tiffany lived from 1848 to 1933. His father was the founder and main owner of a highly successful New York City jewelry and fancy goods store. This business provided Tiffany with both “know-how” and financial backing. Although he was a competent painter and a skilled colorist, Tiffany turned most of his attention and creative energies to the design, manufacture and retail of decorative arts objects. He, with other artists, experimented and developed a new method of making “opalescent” glass which simulated the effects of painting on glass.

Tiffany’s firm eventually offered more than 5,000 colors and varieties of stained glass, and this allowed him to give his glass color and light effects that were previously unknown. Tiffany used several innovations in his work. He layered (or plated) multiple pieces of glass to add depth or to create a misty, ethereal quality, created “drapery glass” by pouring, gathering, twisting, pulling, and folding glass to simulate garment folds, melded tiny colored glass chips with solid sheets to produce a shimmering “confetti” effect often used on clear or colored backgrounds to render foliage, and studded glass with jewel-like fragments. He also wrapped glass in copper foil to depict the organic lines of flowers and foliage, and used lead came to highlight architectural lines.

In 1883 Tiffany established the first of several New York City based firms devoted mostly to the manufacture and sale of glass objects. Initially, they made religious and figural windows for churches and landscape and floral windows for private and business clients. He hired the best creative talents of the era to provide ideas, concepts, and designs for his windows. His firms made four types of windows. One was the landscape window which was rare among religious commissions but is considered his greatest achievement in stained glass. A more common religious commission was figurative windows, in which he followed theological standards of imagery and depicted faces, hands, and feet using paint. The other two types, floral and ornamental (often mosaic) were less expensive and were common in domestic interiors.

During the early 1890’s, Tiffany, working with a team of other people, invented “Favrile” iridescent blown glass. This allowed him to make vases, stemware, place settings, and shades for candlesticks and oil lamps. He capitalized on the new Edison electric light bulb to start producing leaded- glass lampshades, for which he used the pieces of opalescent glass too small to make windows with. Seigfried Bing, the inventor of the term “Art Nouveau” called Tiffany’s lampshades “glowing fantasies”. Tiffany Studios’ “Price List of 1906″ lists more than 125 designs for lampshades, and these, along with his Favrile art glass, took top prizes at all the major fairs and expositions between 1900 and 1910.

The Art Noveau movement which was popular at the time, and his lifelong interest in horticulture, inspired Tiffany to favor naturalistic designs for his stained glass. His beautiful and innovative floral motifs for his lampshades were implemented by a team of prize winning designers. Tiffany’s stained glass business lasted 50 years, until the 1920’s, and during the height of their popularity, Tiffany windows were very expensive symbols of prestige. An average three-by-five-foot piece cost $700 at a time when Tiffany’s own artisans were paid $3 a day.

Louis Comfort Tiffany revolutionized and dominated the American stained glass business throughout the late-19th and early-20th centuries. He was the best known and most prolific of American stained glass artists. Fortunately, the revival of interest in Tiffany windows has encouraged their restoration, so we can still marvel at them today.
